Abstract

Compounds of the formula I, where COB is a protected or unprotected carboxyl group and X is hydrogen or a nucleophilic group, are prepared by oxidising the corresponding 6-(N-nitroso-N-acylamino)penicillanic acid or derivatives thereof. The compounds of the formula I can be used as starting materials for conversion into known cephalosporins by simple treatment with reducing agents. <IMAGE>
