Abstract
1530304 Seals R F OXLEY 29 Nov 1976 [15 Nov 1975] 47175/75 Heading F2B A sealing device for forming a gas-tight seal in an aperture 106 of a chassis member 108, i.e. forming a gas-tight seal between the two sides of the chassis 108, comprises a flexible, e.g. P.T.F.E. annular cylindrical-like member 100 having a shoulder 104 which serves to axially locate the member 100 in the aperture 106 and is transparent or translucent for the passage of light therethrough, the member 100 having a bore 110 into which is fitted, i.e. pressed a cylindrical plug 120 having a radially projecting annular detent 124 at one end, the detent 124 passing through and beyond the chassis 108 to expand the flexible member 100 on the side of the chassis opposite to that engaged by the shoulder 104 sufficiently to effect a gas-tight seal and inhibit subsequent withdrawal of the seal device from the aperture 106. The plug 120 is formed with a lens portion 126 providing a shoulder 130a which seats against the outer face of the shoulder 104 when the plug 120 is pressed fully home in the blind bore 110 of the member 100. A light emitting device, e.g. light emitting diode 116 is mounted by a bush 114 in a second blind bore 112 in the lower end of the member 100, the emitted light therefrom passing through the transparent or translucent portion 118, between the ends of the blind bores 102 and 112, the lens portion 126 of the plug 120 acting to transmit and uniformly disperse the light from the device 116. In the alternative embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the plug (120<SP>1</SP>) is formed as a hollow metal tubular member into which is fitted a cylindrical lens (146) and a shroud or other light directing means (not shown). In Fig. 4 (not shown), the cylindrical plug (12011) is additionally formed with an annular protrusion (150) which, when the plug is fully assembled as above, is arranged to be in the plane of the chassis 108 to improve sealing between the member 100 and chassis 108. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the flexible annular member (100<SP>1</SP>) is formed as a simple flanged annular cylindrical bush, i.e. the bore in which the plug 120 is fitted is simply formed as a through bore.
