Abstract

1530275 Flourine containing copolymers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 11 Sept 1975 37383/75 Heading C3P An oil and water repellant polymer comprises by weight: (a) 20-99% of repeat units of a monomer of the formula wherein R f is a perfluoroalkyl group of 4-14 carbon atoms and R is hydrogen or methyl; (b) 1-80% of polymer chain repeat units from a vinyl monomer which has no non-vinylic fluorine atom; and (c) 0À1-4%, based on the combined weights of (a) and (b) of polymer chain repeat units from a monomer of the formula CH 2 =C(R)-Z-Y<SP>(+)</SP>X<SP>(-)</SP> where R is hydrogen or methyl, Z is a connecting group which increases the susceptibility of the double bond to vinyl polymerization, y<SP>(+</SP>) is an onium ionic group which is not sensitive to pH changes and X<SP>(+)</SP> is a water solubilizing anionic group, the sum of (a) and (b) being 100%. Preferably the monomer (a) has, as group R f , the group C 2 F 5 (CF 2 ) n - where n is 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 in the respective relative amounts of 35 : 30 : 18 : 8 : 3, with methyl acrylate as monomer (b) and CH 2 =C(CH 3 )COOCH 2 -CH(OH)CH 2 N<SP>(+)</SP>(CH 3 ) 3 Cl<SP>(-)</SP> as monomer (c) and optionally the further monomers CH 2 =C(R)CONHCH 2 OH, CH 2 = C(R)COOCH 2 CH(R)OH and are also included. Monomer (b) may also be an alkyl methacrylate in which the alkyl group contains 1-18 carbon atoms. Optionally monomer (c) may have the formula or where n is 2-6, Y<SP>11</SP> is (-NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>)<SP>+</SP> where each of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is a C 1-4 alkyl group or any two of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> together are an alkylene group of 4-5 carbon atoms or and Y<SP>1</SP> is Y<SP>11</SP> or the pyridinium ionic group, e.g:
