Abstract
1530271 Starting discharge lamps SALFORD ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd 13 Feb 1976 [19 Feb 1975] 6985/75 Heading H2H [Also in Division H1] A thermal starter switch 1 for an electric discharge lamp 14 comprises a pair of heaters 2, 3 connected or connectible in series with switch contacts 5 (22, 23 in Fig. 2) and terminals 7, 8, 9 (16, 17, 18 in Fig. 2) enabling the current to flow through the series connected heaters 2, 3 and switch contacts at the time of starting and through one of the heaters 2 only during running of the lamp 14. The heaters 2, 3 each consist of a helix of resistance wire, one 2 being secured between terminal pins 16, 17 (7, 8) projecting from a ceramic base 20 and the other 3 being secured between a pin 19 and a terminal pin 18 (9). The pin 19 carries a fixed contact 23 which is engageable with a contact 22 on a bimetal strip 4 secured to the terminal pin 17(8). The switch is evacuated or gas-filled. When a voltage is connected across input terminals 10, 11, current flows through a ballast choke 15, the heaters 2, 3 and the bimetal 4 which is heated by the heaters 23, carrying the contacts 22, 23(5) to open whereupon the lamp 14 is lit by a high voltage pulse generated across the choke 15. During normal running of the lamp 14, the lamp current flows through the heater 2 which maintains the switch contacts 22, 23 open. The switch is provided with an additional terminal (8<SP>1</SP>) (Fig. 4, not shown) if it is to be used for a lamp with heated electrodes (24, 25).
