Abstract
1530069 Removing noxious gases from air FMC CORP 26 July 1977 31212/77 Heading B1R [Also in Divisions Cl and F4] Buildup of odorous and noxious gases are prevented in an enclosed animal confinement habitat, and the humidity of the habitat is controlled, by removing a portion of the foul air from the habitat, contacting the air with an aqueous solution containing 0.01-1.0 wt.% H 2 O 2 and 10-85 wt.% H 3 PO 4 or H 2 SO 4 having essentially the same temperature of the air so that the odorous and noxious substances are absorbed and oxidised; adjusting the acid concentration during the contacting step to maintain the humidity of the contacted air to between 40% and 95% relative humidity, and returning the air to the confinement habitat. Noxious gases removed may include CO, NH 3 , H 2 S, CH 4 and organic compounds such as mercaptans and skatole. Oxidation may be assisted by a catalyst comprising Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mn, Mo, V, M, Pa or Ag salts. Humidity is controlled by ensuring that the water vapour pressure of the air and aqueous solution approach identical values on contact. Relationships between temperature, vapour pressure and acid concentration are given.
