Abstract

1529971 Filter elements VOKES Ltd 12 July 1976 [14 July 1975] 29484/75 Headings B1D and BIT A filter element comprises a pleated fibrous filtering sheet to which is bonded on one or both sides a fibrous supporting matrix of over 85% void volume, which may have some filtering action but serves mainly to keep the pleats open under pressure. The matrix may comprise glass or synthetic fibres (polypropylene in an example) bonded by heat, needling or adhesive, and the matrix is similarly bonded to the filtering sheet prior to pleating them together. The filtering sheet may be felt, impregnated paper or plastics fibrous web. The element may be generally flat in a rectangular frame or annular with two end caps and perforate support tubes inside and/ or outside. The inner tube could be replaced by a helical spring or a porous core (e.g. polyurethane). Elements may filter gas or liquid, particularly fuel/lubricating oils. A typical matrix comprises 60% of 150 denier polypropylene fibres and 40% of 18 denier fibres comprising a central core and annular sheath of different grades of polypropylene, needled and heat-bonded.
