Abstract

1529679 Transistor switching circuits SIMMS GROUP RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 8 Dec 1975 [21 Dec 1974] 55338/74 Heading H3T [Also in Division H2] A circuit for supplying power to a load 13 such as the field winding of a motor, comprises a switching element 14 connected in series with the load and a primary winding 17 of a transformer 16 across D.C. supply terminals 10, 11, the secondary winding 18 of the transformer being connected to the terminals via a diode 19 which conducts when the flux in the transformer core collapses. The circuit protects the switching element which may be a transistor and also minimizes power loss in the switching element. When the switching element is turned on, the voltage induced in the secondary winding reverse biases the diode 19 and the winding 17 therefore acts as a choke to limit the rate of increase of current. On turning off the switching element 14 the flux in the transformer core collapses and the diode 19 is forward biased to return energy to the supply. A capacitor 21 and a diode 22 are connected in parallel with the switching element 14, the capacitor being charged when the switching element is turned off and discharged through the primary winding 24 of a transformer 23 and a further switching element 27 when the switching elements are turned on. When the switching element 27 is turned off, the energy stored in the transformer core is returned to the supply via a diode 26.
