Abstract
1529440 Immersion mixers FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 16 Dec 1975 [17 Dec 1974] 51527/75 Heading B1C [Also in Division G2] A method of producing a photographic silver halide emulsion in which at least 30% by weight of the silver halide crystals have a single twinning plane and have as boundary faces one or more planes selected from (100) and (111) planes comprises (a) supplying an aqueous solution of silver nitrate and an aqueous solution of a halide to a mixer in communication with a ripening tank containing an aqueous solution of a colloid, in such a manner that the silver ion concentration in the mixer is maintained at a value of from the equivalence point to the point at which PA g # 2 and the change of silver ion concentration (# E Ag) in the mixer is maintained to within 4 millivolts, and (b) quickly mixing the aqueous solutions to form seed crystals of silver halide and then growing the seed crystals, the mean residence time of the reactants in the mixer being not more than 0.2 second, preferably below 0.15 second. The emulsion obtained has a minimum of 30% by weight of "chain-form" silver halide crystals. In a suitable apparatus a mixer 12 is positioned in ripening tank 19 containing aqueous colloid solution 20, which is circulated by stirring blade 15. Reactant liquids supplied through inlets 17 and 18 are vigorously stirred at high-speed by blade 14 which may form a radial and horizontal stream. The seed crystals are discharged through strainer 16, become suspended in the colloid solution and are circulated through the mixer. In another embodiment the reactants are introduced at the bottom of the mixer and the seeds pass upwards into the ripening tank which may take the form of a cubic container.
