1529276 Inter-exchange systems STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 6 Sept 1977 [21 Sept 1976] 39061/76 Heading H4K In a multi exchange system, none of the interexchange links to be used for a speech connection between two subscribers connected to different exchanges of the system are taken into use until a free path has been identified between the calling and called subscribers. To this end the processors of the exchanges are interconnected by an order wire network over which the identity of the called subscriber is transmitted to the terminal exchange. If the required subscriber is free the processors cooperate to find a free inter-exchange path between the subscribers. Some at least of the exchanges and links may be arranged for PCM, TDM operation. Where a TDM exchange has a number of sections, the time channels on an incoming heavy traffic link, may be distributed over different sections of the exchange.
