Abstract

1,182,487. Automatic exchange systems; multiplex transmission; multiplex pulse code signalling. NIPPON TELEGRAPH & TELEPHONE PUBLIC CORP. 26 June, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 29327/67. Headings H4K, H4L and H4R. In a telephone system the switching equipment has a broad band characteristic so as to be capable of passing broad band intelligence such as television as well as normal calls, and each call (or other transmission) is accompanied by signals specifying the type of modulation and band width of that transmission. P.C.M. and F.D.M. inter-exchange links can thus be interconnected to provide say an alternative inter-exchange route if a more direct route is busy. A group of trunks e.g. taken from an earlier switching stage may be used for a single call to provide an increased band width. The equipment shown is located at an intermediate exchange through which a call between subscribers in two other exchanges is to be routed. Signals arriving at the terminal 3 from the exchange of the calling subscriber specify the type of modulation, the channel on which a call will arrive, the band width necessary for the transmission and the numbers of the subscribers involved. Assuming the modulation is P.C.M., a register translator RTL and a marker MK enable a branching pulse generator to generate pulses coincident with the time slot or slots allotted to the call. Multiplex P.C.M. signals enter at terminal 1 and after a delay at D leave at terminal 2 via an inhibit gate. The circuit is synchronized with these signals by a framing circuit FRM and a timing pulse generator T1M. The pulses from the branching pulse generator B1PG enable the inhibit gate and an AND gate, causing the P.C.M. signals in that time slot to be deleted from the multiplex train and divided out through the " AND " gate. The individual pulses of the divided out pulse code are separated on to different lines and lengthened to fill all the time slots. Switching to a required output trunk can then take place through the switching network SWN purely on a space division basis and recoded and multiplex on an outgoing line. F.D.M. signals entering at 4 are separated on to individual channels at E and applied to the switching network where they are switched on a space division basis.
