Abstract

152,898. Thoens, B. Dec. 24, 1919. Refrigerating, vacuum machines and processes for.-A solution of ammonia in water or other solution of a volatile substance is evaporated under reduced pressure in a closed tank, and a part of the cooled licuor is circulated through a cooling- chamber or other external circuit, while the vapours are passed into an absorber containing weak liquor, the strong liquor being returned from the absorber to the evaporator through an interchanger in which it exchanges heat with some of the cool, weak liquor passing to the absorber. In the apparatus shown, vapour is withdrawn from the solution in a tank S by a pump 15 and passed through a pipe 12 into the liquid in the absorber 11, cooled by water flowing through a coil 22. Part of the cooled liquor in the tank S is circulated by a pump 21 through a coil 20 for refrigerating purposes, and returns to the upper part of the evaporator. Another part of the cooled liquor is passed by a pump 17 through an interchanger 18, 19 into the absorber. The warm, strong liquor from the absorber flows under pressure through the interchanger and a pipe 13 back into the upper part of the evaporator, which is fitted with a baffle plate 16, the process being continuous. In a modification, the vapours are withdrawn from the evaporator by an ejector operated by liquid in the absorber, which is circulated through the ejector by a pump.
