1528681 Glass filaments JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 12 Jan 1976 [27 Jan 1975] 00967/76 Addition to 1439777 Heading C1M Glass filaments of average diameter not more than 7 microns are produced by supplying molten glass to rotating rotor 34, passing it through orifices in peripheral wall 48 thereof, and contacting the filaments with gas streams flowing parallel with wall 48 (from nozzles 72), which streams are of insufficient temperature to further attenuate the filaments but are of velocity sufficient to break the filaments to finite lengths, and the streams being separated by relatively quiescent zones, the parameters of process and apparatus being governed by the formulae and where d o = the average filament diameter, p = glass density, v = glass viscosity, F = Glass mass flow through rotor per unit time, L = Thickness of peripheral wall, D = internal rotor diameter, f = Rotor speed (revs/unit time), d = orifice diameter, h = thickness of glass layer on inner wall of rotor, N = total number of orifices.
