Maps.-A method of producing relief maps consists in forming a wax or like model by carving &c., making a metal die and counter-die from the model, moulding a matrix between the dies, transferring the written and drawn features of the map to the matrix, flattening the matrix, making reproductions from the flattened matrix, and moulding the reproductions to the relief form between the dies. A tracing of a flat topographical map, having the contours marked on it is first made, and this is transferred to a block of wax, which is modelled to shape by carving each contour to its true depth and removing the surplus material. From this model a plaster cast and counter mould are prepared, and from these a metal die and counter-die are cast. A matrix of substantially non-elastic material such as paper and thin blotting paper pasted together is placed between the dies in a steam press while the paste is still wet, the resulting product being hard and stiff and conforming to the shape of the dies. When the matrix is thoroughly dry and hard, it is placed on the metal die, and the lines and markings of the original map are transferred to it by means of a pantograph or by photography. The matrix is now removed, moistened, and pressed out flat, when it shows the features distorted as compared with the original map. The flat distorted map on the matrix is transferred or reproduced by photo-lithography. The reproductions are mounted on several sheets of backing-material similar to that employed in making the original matrix, and while still wet are pressed oetween the dies to the relief form.
