Abstract
1528328 Methane production RALPH M PARSONS CO 18 Nov 1975 [20 Nov 1974] 47394/75 Heading C5E A process for the production of methane comprises contacting, at a temperature of 900-1600‹ F., a gaseous stream comprising hydrogen, carbon oxides and steam with a catalyst comprising at least one of Fe, Co, Ni supported on a temperature-stabilized alumina support, excess steam being present to suppress carbon deposition, andÀat least 1 p.p.m. H 2 S being provided in the gaseous stream in partial replacement of excess steam. The hydrogen sulphide may be formed during the reaction by reduction of sulphur compounds (COS, CS 2 , SO 2 , mercaptans) present in the feedstock. In the examples, mixtures of 50% H 2 and 50% CO containing varying amounts of H 2 S (2-1000 p.p.m.) are reacted over a nickel-containing catalyst.
