Abstract

1527704 Collapsible steering columns AUTOMOBILWERK EISENACH VEB 10 Feb 1977 [1 March 1976] 5470/77 Heading B7H A collapsible steering column includes an annular steel deformation member 2 connected with its axis extending perpendicularly to the axis of the column between a steering shaft 1 and a spacer piece 7 which is an integral part of an impact plate 6 associated with a steering wheel 3. Deformation of the member 2 allows the impact plate 6 to align with the driver's body contour in a collision regardless of the rotational position of the steering wheel. The ratio between the width b of the member 2 and its clear height h is no greater than the tangent of the angle of inclination a of the column so that the spacer piece 7 can pass above the end of the shaft 1 without an increase in the deformation force. In another embodiment the deformation member is the circular portion of a steel strip bent into the shape of a capital omega, the projecting ends of the strip forming a spacer piece to which the impact plate is connected. The deformation member may have corrugations formed in its cross-section and may be oval- or egg-shaped instead of circular.
