Abstract

1527640 Automatic position control CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES - CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 23 Dec 1976 [24 Dec 1975 17 March 1976] 53765/76 Heading G3R [Also in Division B3] In resistance welding apparatus, for spot welding steel sheets or bars, the relative displacement of the electrodes (which varies with the expansion of the sheets or penetration of the bars into each other) is measured by an inductive detector during welding, and compared with a reference value. Any difference is used to control either welding current intensity, welding time or force between the electrodes, so as to reduce the difference. The apparatus may also include detectors for the electrical energy dissipated during welding, the welding force or the relative speed between the electrodes. The system is said to monitor, and thus control, the quality of the weld whilst it is being made.
