Abstract

1527352 Brominated polyphenylene oxadiazole filaments IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Sept 1975 [17 Sept 1974 (2) 11 Dec 1974] 40421/74 40422/74 and 53544/74 Heading B5B Polyphenylene - 1,3,4 - oxadiazole has repeating units in which R 1 is a p-phenylene residue and R 2 a n-phenylene one. The mole ratio of R 1 residues to R 2 is from 100/0 to 10/90, and at least some of the R 1 and/or R 2 residues are substituted by bromine at the position ortho to the heterocyclic ring. A solution of the polymer in oleum or sulphuric acid is extruded through a gaseous medium into an aqueous coagulant to form filaments which are then withdrawn, washed to remove the coagulant, dried and heated to a temperature of at least 350‹ C. whilst being stretched to a draw ratio of at least 6 : 1. The polymers are prepared by reacting isophthalic end terephthalic acids or brominated derivatives thereof with hydrazine sulphate. If the unbrominated acids are used, the resultant polymer is treated with bromine.
