[Also in Division C3] A solution of synthetic resin which may be used to form fibres and films comprises from 2 to 15% by weight of certain linear or non-linear polyoxadiazole and/or polyhydrazide resins dissolved in sulphuric acid having a concentration of from 78 to 110% by weight. The resin may be a polyoxadiazole having repeating units of formula or a poly (N-substituted hydrazide) having repeating units of formula or a copolymeric resin having repeating units of formula where R and R<SP>1</SP> are bivalent aromatic residues and R<SP>11</SP> is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group having 1 to 7 carbon atoms, the molecular weight of the resin being such that it has an inherent viscosity of more than 0À04 in a 0À5 gm/dl. resin solution in 95% by weight sulphuric acid at 30‹ C. Fibres are obtained by extruding the solution into a coagulating bath, and films are obtained by pouring the solution on glass plates and dipping the plates into a coagulating bath. The coagulating bath comprises (a) 10 to 68% by weight aqueous solution of sulphuric acid, (b) 10 to 80% by weight aqueous solution of phosphoric acid, (c) 10 to 55% by weight aqueous solution of nitric acid, (d) 60 to 100% by weight aqueous solution of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having a pKa (25‹ C.) of less than 3À8, or (e) a mixture of these solutions. The resin solution and/or the coagulating bath also may contain an inorganic salt. Examples are given in which filaments are stretched, immediately after coagulation, in hot or cold water or hot or cold air and films are biaxially stretched in the wet state.
