Abstract

1527214 Expanding-pulley gearing; clutch control VAN DOORNE'S TRANSMISSIE BV 31 Jan 1977 [9 Feb 1976] 03785/77 Headings F2D and F2L In an expanding-pulley gearing having a driving pulley 1 and a driven pulley 2, hydraulic fluid supplied by a pump 20 driven by the drive motor setting the transmission ratio, the pulley 1 is driven from the drive motor through a fluid-actuated clutch 9 which is only engaged when sufficient fluid pressure is present for the transmission to function. The pump 20 supplies pressure to a chamber 8 in pulley 1 through a control valve 22 operated by a lever 24. A follow-up linkage is provided between valve 22 and the movable flange of driven pulley 2. The pressure required to operate the transmission is set by a relief valve 31, the pressure acting against a spring 34 whose bias is varied with transmission ratio by a link 27. Once the required pressure is reached fluid flows through valve 31 to a line 35 for lubrication and to a line 36 to open a valve 37 and allow fluid pressure to be supplied to engage clutch 9. A pressure reducing valve 39 sets the clutchengaging pressure. The transmission may be controlled manually, by movement of lever 24, or by a system comparing a desired value with a measured value (e.g. output shaft speed). The valve 22 may also be controlled electromagnetically, by an electronically calculated signal. The drive motor may be electric.
