Abstract

1527097 Switching circuits for A.C. loads OMRON TATEISI ELECTRONICS CO 26 Nov 1975 [29 Nov 1974 20 June 1975 9 Oct 1975 (2)] 48664/75 Heading H2H A switching circuit comprises an input signal circuit IC arranged to produce a non-electrical signal from an input signal, a load circuit LC including terminals B1, B2 for connection to an A.C. supply and a load L, and a control circuit CC which is electrically isolated from the input circuit and responds to the non-electrical signal to cause current to flow from the supply through the load. When an input signal is applied to terminals A1, A2, a light emitting diode IND indicates receipt of the signal and a light emitting diode ED switches on a photo transistor PT. If at this instant the A.C. supply is above a zero threshold voltage, a transistor Tr is conductive to shunt the supply of gate current to thyristors SCR1, SCR2. When the A.C. voltage falls to the threshold value however, the transistor Tr is switched off so that gate current is supplied to the thyristors. The thyristors are conductive during respective half cycles of the A.C. supply to provide gate current to a triac TRC during each half cycle. Power is therefore supplied to the load L which may be a heater or a lamp such as a traffic light. The thyristors may have different gate sensitivities so that for intermediate levels of the input signal only one thyristor is conductive and the triac is only conductive during half cycles of one polarity. A variable resistor VR may therefore be adjusted to change the load current in three steps namely zero, half and full current.
