Abstract

1526936 Stuffing-boxes FLEXIBOX Ltd 24 Dec 1975 [6 Dec 1974] 52979/74 Heading F2B Soft packing 4 is provided within a flexible carrier 5 and is substantially uniformly loaded radially by fluid pressure to hold the packing 4 against a shaft 1. The fluid pressure is supplied to the outer surface of carrier 5 from a passageway 15, the outer surface of the carrier having projections 6 defining grooves. A relief valve 17 in a passage 15 limits the pressure. The packing 4 may be asbestos and the carrier 5 may be synthetic rubber. The carrier and packing may be axially split parallel to their axes. The packing and carrier (or only one of them) may be provided with radial bores, which do not register with one another, to prevent undue pressure build up (Fig. 2, not shown). The carrier 5 is shown within a sleeve 7 and the sleeve may have grooves for the fluid, instead of the carrier. Instead of the sleeve 7, secured to a housing 2 by a gland plate 11, the carrier 5 may be fitted in a bore of the housing. The housing 2 and shaft 1 may be of a pump. Removal of the gland plate 11 allows the packing 4, which is preformed, to be replaced.
