Abstract

1526885 Polycarbonates; polyurethanes BAYER AG 25 May 1976 [27 May 1975] 21614/76 Heading C3R A polycarbonate containing aliphaticallybound OH end-groups is made by transesterifying a dihydroxyl compound (D) having aliphatically bound OH groups with ethylene glycol carbonate (C), ethylene glycol being simultaneously removed from the reaction mixture by fractional distillation, as an azeotropic mixture with an inert solvent (S) in which ethylene glycol is insoluble. Suitable solvents are listed 10-30% mol excess of (C) may be used. A transesterification catalyst may be present, many being listed. High MW polycarbonates are obtained if, after removal of (S) and any unreacted (C), some (F) still remains to be distilled off under transesterification conditions. A polyurethane may be formed by reacting a polyisocyanate with the polycarbonate.
