Abstract

152,684. Pichault, S. Oct. 22, 1910, [Convention date]. Springs.-In a machine for coiling springs of unlimited length, the wire is coiled on a short plain mandrel and then passed between a pair of helically toothed disks, which regulate the pitch and carry the coils forward without rotating round their axis, so that the spring may be wound on a drum. The wire is carried by a spool 10 mounted on an axle 8 on a spur wheel 5 keyed to the shaft 4 which is driven by gearing or by a pulley 5a. Blocks 13, 14 hinged to levers pivoted to the wheel 5 at 13a and 14a and connected at their other ends by a rod 15 provided with Belleville washers or springs 15a and an adjusting nut 16 serve to tension the wire. The wire is coiled on a plain mandrel 29 passing through the shaft 4, either secured thereto or held stationary, and having a conical part 29a serving to lead the wire to the same position in spite of varying positions on the spool. A number of turns of wire from the spool are first coiled by hand on a threaded rod of required diameter and pitch and are then removed and placed in the teeth of a pair of helically toothed disks 26, 26a which are mounted on shafts 28, 23 connected by spur gear, the shaft 23 being driven from the wheel 5 by spur and worm gear through a shaft 18. The disk 26<a> is removable so that the wire may be inserted. Coiling then proceeds and the finished coils pass along a groove and are wound on a rotating drum. Lubricant may be automatically supplied to the wire, preferably while between the disks, and may serve to protect the spring from rust when in store. Wires of large section may be heated by a gas blow-pipe or electric current before coiling, and in the case of wires made from steel which requires re-tempering, are passed after coiling through a tempering- bath.
