Abstract

152,659. Buch, M. Oct. 22, 1917, [Convention date]. Hoods.-A folding top or hood for a road vehicle or motor-boat comprises a substantially horizontal outrigger bow pivoted at the rear to a supporting standard and divided into front and rear parts connected by a downwardly broken joint, one of the parts of the bow or linkwork connected thereto being extended to the rear of the standard and shaped to form or carry a how arm. As shown in Fig. 1, the front part 5 of the bow is connected to a supporting standard 3 by the rear part 6, which is extended at 6<c> in rear of the standard and shaped to form or carry a cover-supporting bow, the part 6 being connected to the standard 3 by a fixed pivot. The standard 3 is shown pivoted to a vehicle 1 at 3<a>, and to it is pivoted at 4<a> a rear bow 4, but this arrangement may be reversed, the bow 4 being pivoted to the vehicle and the standard 3 to the bow 4. If desired, an intermediate bow 7 may be pivoted at 7a to the part 6. The part 6 is preferably connected to the bow 5 by a lock joint 6<a>. When the joint 6<a> is broken downwardly in folding, the pull of the top covering 2 upon the extension 6<c> serves to balance the front extension and enable it to be moved back from one side only into the position shown in dotted lines, and to permit the operator properly to arrange the cover material preparatory to complete folding. In a modification, a link 6<y>, Fig. 2, is connected to the standard 3 above the part 6<x> which is pivoted at 6<a> to the bow 5, the link 6Y being pivoted to the bow 5 in advance of 6<a> and being connected by a link 7<y> to the top bow 7<x>. In this case, the link 6<y> is extended at 6<z> to form a cover-supporting bow. Instead of a lock-joint at 6<a>, upward movement may be prevented by a pin x on the link 6<x> acting on the link 6<y>. In another modification, a rear part at each side connects the front part of the bow to the standard, and has pivoted to it a forwardlyinclined top bow, the upper link, having the extension to the rear of the standard, being pivoted to this bow. In a form similar to that shown in Fig. 2, the top of the standard carries a bow, and the standard and rear bow are pivoted to the vehicle at the same point. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also another form, in which links 6, 9, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), are pivoted to the standard 3 at 6<a>, 9<b>, the link 9 being provided with the rear extension 9<x> and being pivoted to the front bow 5 at 5<a>. A link 8 connects the link 6 and the top bow 7 and is pivoted to the link 9 at 9<a>. In this form, metal bow arms 4, 5, 7, 9<x> are shown provided with sockets for wooden bows W, W, W<1>, W<2> respectively, but when allsteel constructions are used, the bows are made in one with -the arms. It is also stated that the rear bow may be omitted for use on two-seated or short cars, the main standard being inclined to a suitable position. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
