1526531 Paint mask J S CLEMENTSON 28 Feb 1977 [1 March 1976 24 May 1976] 08041/76 and 21396/76 Heading B2L A paint mask comprises a structure 12 defining a chamber, said structure being adapted to lie on a flat surface and having a passage 14 through one wall for connection to a source of suction, whereby the structure is held against said surface, a major surface of the structure bounded by at least one edge, or a mask 2 in combination with said structure having a major surface also bounded by at least one edge, being adapted to retain paint by means which increase the absorption above that of a flat surface at room temperature. The means for increasing absorption may be cones as shown, or rods or cylinders standing up from the surface, or meshes overlying absorbent fibres or chips, or where said structure itself is the mask, absorbent paper may overlie the structure, suction serving to assist absorption. In this case holes, e.g. 17, may be provided in the structure to hold the paper. Absorption of paint may be increased by heating the masking surface, to drive off solvent, or by cooling, to freeze the paint. The suction box may be surrounded by a further chamber connected to air under pressure to prevent ingress of paint to the suction box. Various masking arrangements are described.
