Abstract
1526250 Lasers DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 5 Nov 1976 [26 Nov 1975] 48677/75 Heading H1C In a laser with an elongate waveguiding resonant cavity in which a gas discharge takes place, the cavity is formed in an electrically conductive material and has its wall surface, or surfaces, coated with a chemically inert and electrically insulating material of high dielectric strength. As shown the cavity is formed by a milled slot 2 in an aluminium block 1, the block and slot being hard anodized to provide the electrically insulating coating. A cover plate 4 of heat resisting glass closes the slot which is terminated at its ends by resonator mirrors 7, 8. The gas discharge in the resonant cavity is produced between distributed anodes and cathodes 5. Gas is introduced into the cavity from a source 10 through a hollow electrode. The gas mixture may be 4À36% Xe, 8À69% N 2 , 17À39% CO 2 and the remainer He. The cover plate may alternatively be formed of anodized metal. The metal block includes a hole 3 for a cooling fluid.
