Abstract

1525924 Control systems for consuming apparatus G W SPALL 23 Oct 1975 [23 Oct 1974] 45778/74 Heading H2H A load 15 is supplied from an A.C. source LN by way of the winding 12 of a transformer 11, the secondary winding 13 of which is connected to a transistor 18. A signal generator 20 controls the ON-OFF conduction periods of the transistor 18 thereby to alternately shortcircuit and open-circuit the secondary winding 13. Thus by controlling the durations of the ON-OFF periods of the transistor 18 by varying the mark space ratio of the signal generator 20 the current in the load 15 can be controlled. A switch 24 enables continuous energization of the load 15. The bridge 16 may be replaced by a rectifying device 16 if desired together with a free wheel diode 10 and a diode 17, a circuit 19 being provided for suppressing purposes. In an alternative arrangement the primary winding 12 may be directly connected to the A.C. source LN and the transformer 11 provided with a tertiary winding 14 to which a load 25 is connected. The alternate short-circuit and open circuit periods of the secondary winding 13 then controls the load current by controlling the transformed action between the windings 12, 14. The tertiary winding may be in the form of a short circuited turn of a hollow conductor through which water may be passed for heating purposes. The apparatus may be applied to a motor control system (see Fig. 2) wherein the transformer 11 may have duplicate secondary and tertiary windings 13, 14 controlling two load devices 25 in order to control both forward and reverse motions of a single or three-phase A.C. motor, limit switches 27 being provided to automatically change the direction of rotation of the motor. Alternatively the two loads 25 may control the forward and retract motions of a pile hammer.
