Abstract

1525754 Fluidised bed in a magnetic field EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 17 Sept 1975 [11 Oct 1974 3 Sept 1975] 38194/75 Heading B1F A method of fluidizing particulate solids e.g. zeolite cracking catalyst subjected to a force field, e.g. gravity, acting in one direction wherein at least some of the solids comprise magnetizable material, the method comprising passing a fluidizing fluid through the material in a direction opposed to the direction of the said force field, and subjecting at least none of the solids to the action of a magnetic field which is, or has a component which is, of substantially timeinvariant strength acting in the same direction as the force field such that the magnetizable material has magnetization or a component of magnetization greater than 10 gauss in the direction of the force field and the variation, in the bed, of the magnitude of the magnetic field or the said component of the magnetic field to the mean magnitude of the magnetic field is no greater than 125%, and continuously maintaining at least the solids subjected to the action of the magnetic field in a stable fluidised condition by regulating the superficial velocity of the fluidizing fluid to be in the range (a) above the minimum superficial velocity required to fluidize the solids in the absence of the said magnetic field and (b) below the superficial velocity at which bubble formation occurs in the solids during continuous fluidization in the presence of the magnetic field.
