Abstract

1525701 Switching circuits for A.C. loads NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 31 Dec 1975 [3 Jan 1975 23 June 1975] 320/75 and 26623/75 Heading H2H A switching circuit for controlling the supply of A.C. to a load 2 comprises a bi-directional rectifier combination 3, 4 the trigger electrodes of which are connected via respective transistor 10, 12 to D.C. trigger voltage supplies DCV1, DCV2, and a control circuit for causing the simultaneous conduction of the transistors when the next zero voltage instant of the A.C. supply occurs after the supply of a control signal to the control circuit. When a control signal is supplied to terminals 29, 30. a transistor 32 is switched on by an opto-electronic isolator 25. A transistor 22 does not conduct until the output of a bridge rectifier 17-20 falls to zero whereupon the transistor 22 switches on a transistor 27 to energize opto-electronic isolators 13, 15. The transistors 10, 12 are therefore switched on to supply trigger voltages to the thyristors 3, 4, each of which is rendered conductive during alternate half cycles to supply power from a source 1 to the load 2. Removal of the control signal from the terminals 29, 30 switches off the load at the next zero crossing of the supply. A circuit for switching off the load if one of the thyristors becomes open circuit is also described.
