Abstract

1525402 Lubricants EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 8 Aug 1975 [16 Sept 1974] 33172/75 Heading C5F The viscosity index of a mineral lubricating oil is improved by incorporating specified proportions of two different polymeric additives, each of specified kind. The first is an oil-soluble copolymer of ethylene (30 to 80 mole per cent), and C 3 to C 18 alpha-olefine (10 to 70 mole per cent), with or without other monomers, e.g. diolefines, or its oxidized and aminated derivative, has a weight average molecular weight of 10,000 to 800,000, a ratio M w /M n less than 10 and a degree of crystallinity not more than 25%, and is used in an amount of 0À1 to 2% by weight of the composition. The second is a homopolymer or copolymer of a C 8 to C 20 -alkyl ester of acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or fumaric acid, has a molecular weight of 20,000 to 1,000,000, and is used in an amount which is 0À2 to 6À0% by weight of the composition, and is 1À5 to 9À0 times the amount of the first polymer.
