1525188 α-Substituted ketones RHONEPOULENC INDUSTRIES 20 Oct 1976 [21 Oct 1975] 43560/76 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of a ketone containing a secondary or tertiary aliphatic carbon atom in at least one α-position relative to the carbonyl group, of formula: in which Ro represents a saturated or unsaturated, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 30 carbon atoms, R 1 represents a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 30 carbon atoms, and R 2 and R 3 independently represent hydrogen, or a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 30 carbon atoms, or R 1 , together with R 2 or R 3 , forms a divalent hydrocarbon radical of 3 to 13 carbon atoms, or R 2 and R 3 together form a divalent hydrocarbon radical of 4 to 14 carbon atoms, and each of Ro, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is optionally substituted by an inert functional group (as hereinbefore defined), which process comprises reacting an aliphatic halide of formula:- in which Ro is as defined above and X represents a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, with an enoxysilane of formula: in which R 1 , R 2 and R<SP>3</SP> are as defined above, n represents an integer from 1 to 3, R represents a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or, if n is I or 2, at most one R represents a radical of formula:- in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and n are as defined above, R 4 represents a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and A represents a valency bond, an oxygen atom or a divalent hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal or a derivative of a metal of group 1b, 2b, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6b, 7b or 8 (including the lanthanides and the actinides) of the Periodic classification of the elements.
