Abstract
1525114 Lubricants EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 Sept 1975 [17 Oct 1974] 38538/75 Heading C5F A lubricating oil composition comprises a lubricating oil and, as pour point depressant, 0À01 to 2À0 weight per cent of an oil-soluble copolymer, wherein said copolymer is of maleic anhydride or a derivative thereof (defined) and a straight-chain 1- olefin, said 1-olefin being a mixture of a C 20 -C 24 1- olefin, in an amount at least 50 mole per cent, together with either (i) a C 8 -C 10 1-olefin or (ii) 1- hexene, wherein said copolymer is esterified with at least one C 1 -C 8 saturated aliphatic alcohol; said copolymer having a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 7,000. The copolymers may be completely esterified by saturated aliphatic alcohols of 1 to 8 carbon atoms. In the Examples, a mineral lubricating oil composition comprises an oil of pour point 0‹ F and viscosity of about 44À0 SUS at 210‹ F and, as pour point depressants, copolymers of C 20 -C 24 1-olefins/maleic anydride plus (1) octene-1, (3) decene-1, (4) 1-hexene, wherein the copolymer is esterified with 2-ethylhexanol.
