Abstract

152,494. Klay, A. Sept. 16, 1919. Drilling-machines of the turret type have a series of drill-carrying spindles so mounted on the turret that feed can take place at one station only, and the feed controls the turret index bolt and then successively engages a clutch part on the selected spindle with a corresponding part on the driving-spindle and renders friction driving-gearing operative. The turret carries indicating-tags for the drills and operates a speed - controlling device. The spindles are balanced by a spring, and a special belt drive is described. The turret is shown applied to a pillar type machine with a vertically adjustable table 4, Fig. 1. The drills are arranged in order according to diameter, and drills for steel and brass &c. may be arranged alternately. Each drill is carried by its own spindle 22 resting in a carrier 27 slidably mounted in the turret 6 and having a tail 20 resting on a guide rail 14 which is gapped in the position under the driving-spindle 43, the gap being closed by a finger 32 carried by a sliding frame bearing at 38 on a spring that provides for the return of the spindle when the driving spindle feed-wheel 54 is released. The carriers 20 are slotted to receive tags 30 that indicate the size of the drill by their markings and the type by their colour. The spindles are bored at 26 to receive a pilot 45 on the driving-spindle and are clutch-formed at 25 to engage a corresponding part 44. On feeding the driving-spindle, an arm 97 releases an arm 96 on a rock shaft and permits a weight 88 to release the index bolt 38 through linkage 90, 94 and through linkage 84, 83 and rock-shaft 81 and lever 82 raises the bearing 75 of a shaft 56 to carry a friction wheel 69 into contact with a disk 42 splined to the spindle and thus to raise the disk into contact with a friction wheel 68 on a shaft 55. The driven ends of the shafts 55, 56 are mounted in bearings swivelling at 58 and driven by a belt 60 arranged as shown in Fig. 7. The clutch 44, 25 is set to engage before the friction drive becomes operative, and the amount of power transmissible is regulable by adjusting the position of the weight 88. The friction wheels are adjustable along these shafts by a sliding-yoke 71 so operated by a pinion 79 on the turret that the spindle is always driven at a speed appropriate to the drill selected.
