Abstract

1524693 Removing radioactivity from hydrocarbons SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 5 Nov 1975 [7 Nov 1974] 45915/75 Heading C5E The radioactivity level of a stream of hydrocarbons is reduced by the removal of radioactive metals or compounds thereof by passing the stream at 100-400‹ C. through a solid or liquid contact material at a space velocity of 0À1 to 100 Kg per hour per litre of space filled by the contact material. The hydrocarbon stream has a natural radioactivity level and can be derived from a crude petroleum or can be a condensate from natural gas. The stream can be heated within the treatment space by heating a portion of the purified stream and recycling this heated portion to the contacting zone. In examples, a 129-239‹ C. hydrocarbon stream is contacted at 230‹ C. and 35-40 bar to reduce its radioactivity level from 1À05-2À3 pCi/g to 0À02-1À1 pCi/g using as the contact materials (a) an alumina extrudate impregnated with Ni and Mo; (b) glass beads; (c) a mixture of an alumina extrudate impregnated with Ni and Mo and silicon carbide particles, and (d) a mixture of ceramic rings and stainless steel sieves.
