Abstract

1524172 Dewatering sludge AGWAY Inc 7 Jan 1977 [9 Jan 1976] 00529/77 Headings C1C and C1B A non-compressible sewage sludge containing a known percentage by weight of water but no gaseous air phase is dewatered by mixing the sludge with a quantity of mineral acid or anhydride thereof sufficient to extract substantially all of the water initially contained in the sludge to form a mixture of sludge solids and dilute acid, and placing in a reaction vessel the mixture and a base of a type and quantity sufficient to react with the acid to generate a reaction heat sufficient to remove by evaporation a predetermined quantity of the water remaining in the mixture to allow formation, without filtration, of a granular product comprising sludge solids and a salt. The product has useful soil nutrient properties. The base is preferably ammonia, specified acids are sulphuric, sulphurous, phosphoric and phosphorous acids and specified acid anhydrides are sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide.
