Abstract

1523932 Artificial sweeteners TATE & LYLE Ltd 23 June 1976 [4 July 1975 (2)] 28229/75 and 28233/75 Heading A2B [Also in Divisions A5 and C6] An artificial sweetener comprises (a) a protein sweetener e.g. thaumatin a monellin, and/or saccharin and (b) an aldohexuronic or a salt, amide or lactone thereof, e.g. D-glucuronic acid, D-glucuronolactone, sodium D-glucuronate, glucuronamide, D- galacturonic acid, D-mannuronic acid, or mannuronolactone, or L-guluronic acid. When the protein is the only sweetener present the ratio of D-series modifier to protein should be x:350 to x:1750 where x is the no. of times sweeter the protein is compared with sucrose at 5% concentration, and for an L-series modifier the range should be x: 12 to x:72. When saccharin is the only sweetener present the ratio of modifier to saccharin should be 1:10 to 1:1. Also present may be additional sweeteners e.g. sucrose or cyclamate; sweetness modifiers e.g. D(+)-arabitol xylitol, L-gulose, D-fucose, lactulose, glucoheptose, D-galactose, or D-galactosamine; Na Cl such that the weight ratio of NaCl to saccharin is 1:10 to 4:10; Ca(OH) 2 such that the ratio of Ca(OH) 2 to saccharin is 1:100 to 5:100; or solid or liquid carriers e.g. aqueous ethanol, glycerol, edible oil for applying the sweetener by spraying, or sucrose, dextrose, sorbitol, maltodextrin, starch or protein (e.g. soy). The sweetener may be in tablet form. Uses are e.g. in soft drinks, candies, juices, syrups, squashes, sauces, condiments, salad dressings, frozen desserts (ice cream or sherbert), icing, gelatin, toothpaste, mouthwash or chewing gum. In an example a bottling syrup for a low calorie lemonade contains thaumatin, saccharin, glucuronic acid, benzoic acid, citric acid and lemon essence, and can be diluted and carbonated.
