S n for supplying optical signals representing transmitter input signals; at least one receiver E 1 ... E k for supplying output signals in response to optical input signals; the or each receiver E 1 ... E k being continuously connected to the transmitters S 1 ... S n by respective light conductors L; and on-off switching control means for controlling the transmitters and/or the or each receiver for making the or each receiver respond selectively to the transmitters. The arrangement avoids mechanical switching and the risk of cross-talk that might be inherent in electronic switching of electric inter-connections. The optical signals may themselves constitute information, or they may act as carriers for information provided by modulation of light sources supplying input optical signals to the transmitters. Selective switching may be performed by timedivision multi-plex.
