1523870 Platen presses; registration BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 31 Oct 1975 [16 Nov 1974] 49669/74 Headings B6C and B6J [Also in Division B4] A press for use in, e.g. punching holes in shoe uppers comprises an upper presser member 39 carrying a tool means, e.g. a punching assembly 40 and movably mounted relative to a lower presser member 6 associated with a workpiece supporting means 14 such that the supporting means and punching assembly can be brought into registration, the punching assembly and the supporting means each having an abutment 42 and 20 respectively so that when they are moved to bring them into alignment, the abutments come into engagement thereby to maintain the tool assembly and a workpiece on the supporting means in correct registration, and means, e.g. a ram, 36 for effecting a relative movement of approach of the presser members. The punching assembly comprises a number of punches arranged to project through holes in a spring- loaded stripper plate when the stripper plate is pressed upwardly by contact of plunger 44 with bosses 46 on the supporting member or carrier 14; the lower surface of the stripper plate is formed with ridges corresponding to stitch marking on the workpiece and are arranged to be pressed into an ink pad 30 on the lower presser member 6. The workpiece supporting member 14 is guided in slideways 12 and loaded by a spring 18. A locat ng plate having an aperture corresponding to the shape of the workpiece, e.g. a shoe upper, is clamped on the member 14 by clamps 28. In operation, the ram is moved along the upper presser member 34 by a motor and then lowered to bring the ridges on the stripper plate into contact with the ink pad. The ram is then raised and moved until the abutments are engaged, any overtravel of the transverse movement of the ram being accommodated by the sliding movement of the carrier 14 and the spring 18. The ram is then lowered to effect a punching stroke. In modifications, a second carrier 14 can replace the ink pad 30 such that the press can effect pressing strokes at both stations A, B; if required, an inking roller can be positioned between the two stations A, B. The punching assembly may be replaced by any other tool, e.g. a cutting-out knife or an embossing punch. The cutting surface on the carrier 14 may be made of a self-sealing material.
