Knobs 17, 18 steer the magnet and hence the piece, a button 24 sets the time interval and a knob 20 winds a spring of the timing mechanism. Each knob 17, 18 rotates a gear 56 meshing with a gear 58 engaging teeth on a flexible strip 42, 52 movement of which carries along a respective rod 36 extending transversely of the surface and guided by pinions 38 on the ends of the rod engaging fixed racks 40. The two rods engage slots in the magnet. The button 24 moves a slide 80, Fig. 7, so that it engages a stop 78, or a stop 76, or neither, on a member 74 carried round with the knob 20, so determining how far the knob can be wound. The spring escapement mechanism produces a clicking noise. A start-stop button 22 can be moved to jam the escapement. When the knob 20 has reached its unwound position, a stop 126 carried round with it engages a slide 114 and moves it against a spring (118) to cause teeth (122, 124) to jam the knobs 17, 18 and prevent further movement thereof. Another stop (138) on the knob trips a bell.
