Abstract

1523727 Finishing fabrics UNITEX Ltd 11 Nov 1975 [11 Nov 1974 6 Jan 1974] 48741/74 Heading D1S A knitted fabric composed at least in part of synthetic fibres is finished by plastically deforming at least some of the synthetic fibres by heat and pressure, setting the fibres in the deformed condition by cooling, and relieving the internal stresses in the deformed fibres by heating. The fabric may be composed entirely of synthetic fibres or may be a blend of synthetic and natural fibres, e.g. polyester and cotton. A denier in the range of 40-150 is specified. As shown, the fabric from a roll 10 passes through the nip 12 between rollers 14, 16. Preferably, the roller 14 has a metallic surface and is heated, either by the passage of a heated fluid therethrough or by an electrical resistance therein, to a temperature of 105‹- 185‹C. The peripheral surface of the roller 16 may be formed by a cushioning material, e.g. compressed cotton or a plastics material. The roller 16 may also be heated. The journals for the rollers 14, 16 are adjusted to give a pressure at the nip 12 of 135-175 kiloponds per square centimeter. The peripheral velocity of the roller 14 is slightly greater than that of the roller 16 so that the surface of the roller 14 frictionally slips relative to the fabric. Immediately after leaving the nip 12, the fabric is cooled by blowing a gas, e.g. air, thereon through ducting 18 and which is at a temperature of 20‹-25‹C. The fabric is wound on a take-up roll 20 which is then repositioned, Fig. 2, at the entrance to a heating chamber 22 in which the temperature is maintained at 100‹-180‹C. As the fabric leaves the roll 20 it has a temperature of 75‹-155‹C. The fabric is re-wound on a roll 24. As it passes from the roll 20 to the roll 24, the fabric is subjected-to a tensional force only great enough to move it along the desired path.
