Abstract

1523423 Hydrogen CORNING GLASS WORKS 29 March 1977 [ April 1976] 13098/77 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C2 and C6] The continuous photo-metabolic production of a product, exemplified by the photoproduction of molecular hydrogen from aqueous malate solution by cells of Rhodospirillum rubrum (bacteria) and the photosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) from NADP by cells of Anacystis nidulans (algae), is carried out in an apparatus consisting essentially of a block of plastics material or glass 1, Figs. 1 and 2, which is formed with a hollow reaction chamber 7 and is transparent or translucent to visible light emitted from banks of lamps 15. In the chamber whole cells of micro-organisms are held in a gel-like material (agar or specified plastics materials) as a film 170À1 to 2À0 mm. thick spread over both sides of a plastics supporting plate 9. Glass beads 41 and projections 43 act as spacers keeping the plate 9 away from the reactor walls 21 so that the incoming substrate may readily flow through the chamber and achieve contact with the cells. The apparatus depicted in Fig. I incorporates a support 9 of oval configuration and a collector 25 for gaseous metabolic product. Other photosynthetic systems mentioned are the photoproduction of molecular hydrogen from thiosulphate or hydrogen sulphide and of adenosine 5'-triphosphate from adenosine 5'- diphosphate using specified species of purple bacteria, and the photosynthesis of molecular hydrogen from water by specified algal species. Molecular hydrogen may also be produced by biotransformation of the NADPH obtained according to the invention using specified bacteria without the special illumination.
