Abstract

1523295 Testing bonds between layers of material SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 15 Oct 1975 42225/75 Heading G1G and G1S In testing the bond between layers of a stratified material by observing its response to vibrations, the area of the material under test is subjected to a reduced pressure. Either the whole test piece (6) may be enclosed in a vacuum chamber (1), Fig. 1 (not shown) or a local vacuum may be created around the test probe 35 within a chamber 28, having resilient sealing means, e.g. a relatively soft foamed rubber layer 33 with semi-closed cells on a more rigid layer 34 of foamed rubber with closed cells. The probe comprises a Piezo-electric driver 13 and Piezo-electric pick-up 16, mild steel 14 and polymethylmethacrylate 15 and is supported on parallel linkages, counterbalanced by a weight 36, a spring 37 providing a constant static contact force, independent of orientation. The amplitude or phase of the picked up signals may be measured. The invention may be used to test polyurethane foam linings of tanks and light-weight panels of sandwich construction.
