Abstract
1523231 Monitoring gas content ultrasonically R J REDDING 11 Feb 1977 [18 Feb 1976 7 April 1976 1 Dec 1976] 06355/76 14179/76 and 50046/76 Heading G1G The gas content in a space is monitored by energizing a transducer 2 with an audiofrequency modulated electric carrier signal so as to transmit ultrasonic energy through the space, receiving with transducer 4 at least part of the ultrasonic energy transmitted through the space, and monitoring the phase relation between the transmitted audio modulation and the received audio modulation. As shown, a phase-locked loop arrangement is used but, as described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown), a simple phase comparison may be made. Applications include warning of leaks of dangerous gas from containers. Also temperature and humidity measurements may be made. The transmission path may be shielded, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown). A plurality of apparatus may be connected to a single processor and are enabled in sequence, the processor being connected to a display which indicates the location of any alarm condition.
