Abstract

1522972 Quenching steel sections CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 6 Oct 1975 [4 Oct 1974 3 Feb 1975 28 Feb 1975(3) 7 March 1975 25 March 1975] 40759/75 Heading C7N A steel section having at least one flat face is surface quenched as it leaves the finishing stand of a rolling mill by a suspension of liquid in gas, the conditions being such that the unquenched region of the cross-section retains sufficient heat to subsequently temper the quenched region while itself being converted to ferrite and carbides. The liquid is preferably water or a solution of a mineral salt and/or surfactant and is suspended in air or steam. In a preferred embodiment the conditions are such that the final product has in cross-section a microstructure including one zone parallel to the flat face of the section and consisting of tempered martensite and non-tempered bainite, with below that a zone of non-tempered bainite and non-tempered ferrite-pearlite. There may additionally be an outer most zone of tempered martensite and an inner most zone of non-tempered ferritepearlite. Suitable forms of apparatus are shown in Figs. 2 and 4. In the former a spray manifold chamber moves on rollers 15 along the flange of beam 11.
