1522224 Modified elastomers POLYSAR Ltd 26 March 1976 12213/76 Addition to 1455916 Headings C3M, C3P and C3Q Rubbery conjugated C4-6 diene polymers, or rubbery copolymers of such dienes with a C8-10 vinyl or vinylidene aromatic hydrocarbon or with a C3-5 unsaturated nitrile, said polymers or copolymers also comprising 0À5-10 millimoles of tertiary amine groups per 100 grams polymer, are reacted with a halogen compound of formula X-CH2-R-CH2-Y in which X and Y are each Cl, Br or I, and R is either a mononuclear aromatic group containing one -CH2X or -OCH3 substituent or a polynuclear aromatic group selected from substituted or unsubstituted diphenyl, diphenyl ether, diphenyl thioether, diphenyl C1-4 alkane or naphthalene, said substituents (if any) being lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkyl halide or aryl, and the X-CH2- and -CH2-Y groups being directly attached to different nuclei of the polynuclear aromatic group. The products have improved green strength, and may be blended with other polymers and with conventional compounding ingredients. In Examples, the polymer is SBR or nitrile rubber each containing units of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and the halogen compound is 4,4<1>-bis(chloromethyl)- diphenyl ether, 4,4<1>-bis(bromomethyl)diphenyl ether, 2,6 - bis(bromomethyl)naphthalene, 4,4<1>- bis(bromomethyl(diphenyl or 4,4<1>-bis(bromomethyl(diphenyl) methane. In Example 6, a composition of such a modified polymer with natural rubber and polybutadiene is described.
