Abstract

1520382 Synthetic paper TORAY INDUSTRIES INC 21 July 1976 [25 July 1975] 30362/76 Heading D2B [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Synthetic paper is prepared from an aggregate of a fibrous material comprising a surface active agent, a hydrophilic high molecular weight compound, hydrophobic finely divided particles of an inorganic substance (i.e. inorganic particles, such as silica, TiO 2 , CaCO 3 , kaolin or talc, which have been treated chemically or physically to render them hydrophobic) incorporated within the polymer body of the fibrous material, and an olefin polymer. The surface active agent may itself be polymeric and the hydrophilic macromolecular compound may be, for example, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyethylene oxide, carboxymethylcellulose, sodium polyacrylate or water-soluble starch. The fibrous composition can be formed by ejecting an emulsion of the specified ingredients through a nozzle orifice. In Example 8 paper is formed from mixtures of 2 parts by weight of a product of the invention and 8 parts of wood pulp.
