Abstract

1520251 Protecting magnetic recording media EMI Ltd 14 July 1975 [13 July 1974] 31144/74 Heading B8M A recording device comprises reels 11 and 12 having hubs 13 and 15 which are preferably made of zinc or magnesium based alloys, a metal magnetic recording tape 2, preferably made of "VICALLOY" (Registered Trade Mark) which is an alloy of iron, cobalt, vanadium elements and supported on the reels 11, 12 in contact with the hubs 13, 15 by having their ends attached in. angled slots 16, whereby when the tape 2 and the reels 11, 12 are immersed in an electrolytic medium such as sea-water the hubs 13, 15 being of higher electropositive material relative to the material of the tape 2 act as a sacrificial electrode, thereby delaying the corrosion of the tape 2. The device is used in the "black box" of an aircraft. The hubs 13, 15 may be made of different materials provided they are more electropositive than the material of the tape 2. The hubs can be protected against too rapid dissolution by covering part of the surface with an insulator such as a plastics film or the hub material may be such that it is slightly more electropositive than the material of the tape 2.
