Abstract

1519664 Reacting polyesters with carbonates GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 31 March 1976 [2 May 1975] 12936/76 Heading C3R The carboxyl end group concentration of a polyester is reduced by reacting the polyester with a monomeric organic carbonate in the presence of, as catalyst, 0À0005 to 0À01% by weight, . based on the polyester, of an alkali metal alkoxide having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an alkali metal salt of a monocarboxylic acid having 1 to 9 carbon atoms. The amount of carbonate is preferably from 0À05 to 1À0% by weight based on the polyester. The Examples describe reducing the carboxyl end group concentration of polyethylene terephthalate using diphenyl carbonate or bis-(p-chlorophenyl) carbonate and sodium acetate or caesium acetate.
