Abstract

1518815 Mixing apparatus SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 7 July 1975 28512/75 Heading B1C [Also in Division B5] In a method of and apparatus for reducing the molecular chain length of polymers by shear degradation the polymer is fed to a worm screw extruder 25 to form a melt, removed from the extruder and passed through a narrow gap 13 between relatively rotating members 10, 12 of an independently driven shearing device in which shear stresses sufficient to degrade the melt are generated. In the apparatus shown a valve member 21 provides for alternative straight throughflow of materials in the extruder without use of the shearing device or for diversion of the melt thereto and return to the extruder section 24. Heating or cooling means may be provided in the shearing device for heat exchange with the materials flowing through the gap 13 the temperature of which may also be controlled by speed control of the rotor 10.
