Abstract
1518101 Seat-belt AUTO RESTRAINT SYSTEMS Ltd 7 July 1975 [9 July 1974] 30389/74 Heading A3V Seat belt apparatus adapted to move the belt automatically into and away from an operative position across the seat of a vehicle comprises a belt 10 having diagonal and lap belts 13, 14 belt displacing means 21, belt retraction means 18 20 and drive means (an electric motor as disclosed) coupled to the means 21 to cause the latter to move and displace the belt to and from the said operative position. Belts 13, 14 are connected at one end to a short bell 15 secured to lever 21, their other ends passing through adjustable anchorage 19 or slot 16 to respective inertia locking, spring rewound drums 20, 18. A control system (Fig. 4 not shown) is described which, under the control of door switch 46 drives the arm 21 between the belt inoperative position and its operative position (shown dotted) where it may be held by a locking device 68 (not described in detail) controlled by the handbrake, door handle or ignition switch or released only when the motor (42) drives the arm towards the inoperative (full line) position. Rewind drum, inertia locking. Fig. 5. The spring rewind drums of devices 18, 20 have ratchet wheels 119 locked against payout when a pawl is moved from position 121' to position 121" by the tilting of member 122, 129, 133 under acceleration forces. This action is inhibited when the door is opened by a lever 123 which is moved by spring 124 to a position abutting an extension 127 on the pawl. As the door closes plunger 125 rises along nylon sill ramp 135 to raise the lever clear of the pawl, against the action of spring 124. In a modification the position of lever 123 is determined by the hand brake position. The construction of the inertial sensor (Fig. 6 not shown) is described.
